I have always enjoyed literature by authors of color that step beyond the preconceived borders of "hood love" "get rich" or "teen mom" stories. I read autobiographies and historical related material to keep my mind stimulated but sometimes I enjoy reading for entertainment. A few semesters ago my professor Luz Calvo introduced our Ethnic Writers course to African American science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler. We read Parable of the Sower which was the story of a post apocalyptic world and the struggle of a young woman attempting to build a thriving community after losing her entire family. After reading Parable of the Sower I was hooked. So last month my daughter and I headed down to Barnes and Noble to find more of her books. I purchased Wild Seed and Kindred. Wild Seed is about two beings, Anyanwu a healer, and Doro powerful entity, who breeds people based on their mental abilities. The two posses superhuman abilities and have lived for hundreds of years without crossing paths. The novel introduces the new and sometimes tumultuous journey that begins once their paths cross.
